UAE thwarts Houthi attack, missiles injure 2 in Saudi Arabia

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) destroyed two ballistic missiles fired by Houthis before falling, causing no casualties.

The latest incident comes a week after a suspected Houthi rebel drone strike on the United Arab Emirates killed three people, including a Pakistani national, according to foreign news agencies Reuters and AFP.

The Houthis have been fighting the Saudi-led military coalition, which includes the United Arab Emirates, for more than six years.

The Houthis have repeatedly launched cross-border missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia, and on January 17 carried out an unusual attack on the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE Ministry of Defense said that the remnants of the destroyed ballistic missiles fell in different areas around Abu Dhabi.

The Defense Ministry added that it was taking necessary security measures against all attacks.

The UAE's The National newspaper quoted citizens as saying that flames were seen in the sky in the capital around 4:30 am.

The latest attack on Monday was the second since last week's attack on UAE soil that targeted a fuel depot in Abu Dhabi, killing three people and setting fire near the international airport. Had taken

The Houthi-run Al-Masira television said it would announce the details of a large-scale military operation against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in a matter of hours.

On the other hand, Saudi state media reported that the Arab League intercepted a ballistic missile, the remnants of which damaged workshops and vehicles in the south of Saudi Arabia.

Earlier on Sunday night, state media reported that a ballistic missile had landed in the south, injuring two foreigners and damaging an industrial area.

Houthi rebels threaten

Yemen's Houthi rebels have threatened to step up their attacks on the United Arab Emirates after two ballistic missiles were fired at Abu Dhabi.

The Houthis said the attack targeted Abu Dhabi's Al-Zafra airbase and key locations in Dubai.

Yahya Sari, a military spokesman for the Houthi rebels, said in a televised statement that the attacks had been carried out with "perfect accuracy".

"We are now ready to further expand this operation in the next phase and to counter the growing tension," he added.

The Yemeni conflict is widely seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The United Nations, which is working with the United States to fight a ceasefire in Yemen, has expressed concern over rising tensions and called on both sides to control the situation as much as possible.

Meanwhile, the Arab military alliance has stepped up air strikes on Houthi strongholds in Yemen.

At least 60 people were killed in an attack on a makeshift detention center in the northern province of Saada on Friday, and at least 20 people were killed in an operation in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa on Tuesday.

The military coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 after the Houthis ousted an internationally recognized government from Sanaa.

The Houthi rebel group says it is fighting a corrupt regime and foreign aggression.

The UAE had significantly reduced its presence in Yemen in the wake of a stalemate in military tensions in 2019, but Emirati-backed Yemeni forces recently began fighting Houthis in key energy-producing provinces in Yemen. Has done
