QUETTA: A policeman was martyred in an explosion near Balochistan University


 
A policeman was martyred and 17 others were injured in an explosion near Balochistan University on Sariab Road in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.

Balochistan government spokesman Liaquat Shahwani said a police truck on duty at the gate of Balochistan University was hit by an explosive device mounted on a motorcycle.

The blast killed one policeman and injured 17 others, he said.

A Balochistan government spokesman said an emergency had been declared at the hospital and those involved in the incident would be arrested and brought to justice.

The blast caused a stampede in the area and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area.

Provincial Home Minister Zia Lango said security personnel were guarding students protesting in front of the university.

He said the attackers wanted to target students and police were targeted due to tight security.

The provincial home minister said the miscreants were trying to create chaos by targeting students.

On the other hand, Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed condemned the blast on Sariab Road in Quetta and demanded a report of the blast from IG Police Balochistan.

He expressed sympathy to the family of the martyred policeman and prayed for the recovery of the injured and said that the federal government would provide all resources and assistance to the provincial government.

The federal interior minister said that terrorists would not be allowed to destroy the peace of Balochistan.

Earlier, a bomb blast near a Frontier Corps vehicle in Khost, Harnai District, Balochistan, on September 25 killed at least four security personnel and injured two others.

The Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the blast.
