Taiwan's defense minister has warned that relations with China are at an all-time high due to four decades of military conflict.
According to the report, he added that by 2025, Beijing will be in a position to attack completely.
Taiwan fears constant Chinese aggression because China believes it owns the territory of the sovereign democratic island and, if necessary, will one day seize it by force.
Defense Minister Chiu Qiao Cheng presented his analysis yesterday when a record 150 Chinese warplanes, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, flew against his airspace from Friday to the previous day.
"Ever since I joined the army, the current situation for the army is the worst in more than 40 years," he told parliament.
He warned that "minor negligence" or "miscalculation" could lead to tensions and that China would be able to invade the island in the next four years.
"He is still capable of attacking today, but he will have to figure out what the cost will be and what kind of results he wants to achieve," said Chew Kyu Cheng.
"After 2025, its cost and losses will be minimal," he said without elaborating.
Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote a letter to Iceland's newly elected opposition leader, calling the attack on Taiwan "inevitable" and describing relations with it "the worst."
Since Xi Jinping's election as Taiwan's president in 2016, Beijing has stepped up diplomatic and economic pressure on the country, believing the island to be 'already independent' and part of 'China individually'.
"China's action has severely damaged peace and stability in the region," he said.
"I want to tell the Beijing authorities that they have to exercise restraint to avoid possible misunderstandings and possible conflicts over events," he said.
Recently, Xi'an said that Taiwan would "do whatever it wants" to avoid threats, but that it was looking forward to peaceful coexistence with China.
