A taxi driver arrested in Karachi on a misunderstanding has been released from Guantanamo Bay after 17 years

Ahmed Rabbani, who was arrested 19 years ago in Karachi on a misunderstanding, was finally released after serving 17 years in Guantanamo Bay.

According to the international news agency, the British NGO "Re Preview" has announced that due to their efforts, an order has been issued for the release of Ahmed Rabbani, an innocent man who has been imprisoned for 17 years in the notorious US prison Guantanamo Bay.

The New York Times also claimed in a report that during the rule of former President Pervez Musharraf in 2004, Ahmed Rabbani was handed over to US authorities in exchange for a 5,000 reward.

Ahmed Rabbani, a taxi driver, was arrested 19 years ago in Karachi and handed over to US authorities in Afghanistan, where he was detained for 545 days, according to human rights NGO Reprieve. Was physically abused until

The British NGO revealed that just two days after his arrest in Karachi, it was discovered that he was not a wanted terrorist, Hassan Gul, but that Ahmad Rabbani was nevertheless sent to Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, too, US officials sent Rabbani to Guantanamo Bay, where he was held for 17 years without trial, despite an incomplete investigation. No trial sheet was prepared against Ahmed Rabbani nor was it presented in court.

Ahmed Rabbani had gone on a life-long hunger strike in jail after his appeals repeatedly failed. The British agency Reprieve fought a legal battle for Ahmed Rabbani on which 6 US security agencies issued a joint decision to release Ahmed Rabbani.

It is interesting to note here that a man named Hassan Gul, on whose suspicion Ahmed Rabbani was arrested, was also arrested and imprisoned with Ahmed Rabbani in Bagram Jail but was released 3 years later.

After his release, the real terrorist Hassan Gul rejoined militant groups and was killed in a drone strike in Waziristan in 2012, while innocent Ahmed Rabbani endured torture at Guantanamo Bay.

According to the allegations made against Ahmad Rabbani by the US intelligence agencies, the accused stayed in Afghanistan in 1994, received military training in Khost for 7 months and Khaldan for 2 months and was imprisoned in Pakistan between 1995 and 1996 and from Osama bin Laden in 1997.

Ahmed Rabbani has also worked with Khalid Muhammad Sheikh, the protagonist of 9/11, and provided travel facilities to Arab members of al-Qaeda in Pakistan. Ahmed Rabbani's other brother, Abdul Rahim Rabbani, is also being held at Guantanamo Bay.

When Ahmed Rabbani was first contacted by NGO Preview, he said that since he was born in Saudi Arabia, he was fluent in Arabic and on this basis he used to pick up and drop off Arabic passengers from the airport. However, I do not know who those passengers were.

The Pakistani government has always taken the position that the 600 people arrested from Pakistan and handed over to the United States were all foreigners. Ahmed Rabbani was said to be of Burmese descent and was born in Saudi Arabia.
