In Egypt, police arrested the parents of an 11-year-old bride and a 12-year-old groom just hours after the engagement was announced.
According to Al-Arabiya News, the parents who announced the engagement of minors in the Egyptian village of Amu Khanin were arrested a few hours later. An 11-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were announced to be engaged in a village 30 km from Egypt.
According to the Egyptian National Council for the Rights of the Child, the two families began preparations for the engagement in earnest. Under this article, the government has the right to take action against parents for treating their children violently, rudely or inappropriately.
