MOSCOW: Eight people have been killed in a student shooting at a university in the Russian city of Perm.
This is the second major shooting at an educational institution in Russia this year, according to the French news agency AFP.
Russia's Investigative Committee to Investigate Major and Serious Crimes said six people were injured and the gunman was identified as a university student.
According to the British news agency Reuters, Perm State University is located 1300 kilometers away from the Russian capital Moscow.
According to police and the university administration, the gunman was arrested immediately after the incident.
Scenes aired on local media showed students jumping out of first-floor windows to save their lives.
It should be noted that Russia has strict restrictions on the possession of firearms by citizens, but the purchase of certain types of firearms is allowed for hunting, personal protection and sports purposes.
However, those who want to buy a gun have to pass different conditions and exams.
Earlier in May this year, a gunman opened fire on a school in the Russian city of Kazan, killing nine people, most of them children.
In November 2019, a 19-year-old student opened fire at his college in the eastern town of Blogoshensk, killing a classmate and injuring three others. The attacker later shot himself.
In October 2018, a teenage gunman killed 20 people at Crimea's Ketch Technical College, and the 18-year-old attacker shot himself.
