The South African government has proposed legalizing women to marry more than one man at a time.
South Africa has seen an increase in the number of women marrying more than one man at a time, according to the World News Agency. It has become so common that a second or third marriage is performed with the consent of the first husband.
In view of the complications arising from this situation, the Home Department has proposed to legalize polyandry for women to have two husbands at a time. Earlier, top government officials also hinted at unusual changes in marriage laws.
The government's proposal to legalize polygamy has drawn strong criticism from all quarters. Religious leaders have previously rejected it as unacceptable.
Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections, but have warned that the government will not allow any such legislation to destroy African civilization.
After severe criticism from various quarters, the government changed its stance and said that the proposal put forward by the Home Minister was part of a green paper which had nothing to do with government policy.
