During a major operation by the special team of Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, a large network supplying stolen water from the Water Board through underground lines in an industrial area of several kilometers on the superhighway has been caught.
The team has seized goods worth lakhs of rupees and registered a case against the three accused.
According to Rashid Siddiqui, in-charge of the anti-theft cell of Karachi Water Board, his team carried out operations at three different places in Ahsanabad within the limits of Site Super Highway Police Station on a tip-off received by Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah.
He said that water thieves were stealing millions of gallons of water daily from the main supply line of K2 and K3 water boards in Ahsanabad. Two four-inch diameter connections have been seized from the Water Board's 66-inch diameter supply line to Orangi Town Manghopar Road, while two six-inch diameter connections have been seized from the 84-inch diameter mainline. The connection was also taken from the 8-inch line in Block 22.
According to Water Board officials, the stolen water was supplied to the industrial area for several kilometers through underground lines.
According to Rashid Siddiqui, heavy generators, heavy pumps, pipes and other equipment were seized during the operation along with a heavy contingent of police and Water Board officers.
He said that Saleem Memon, Liaqat, Firdous, Shahid and Amjad were involved in water theft who had the backing of a local political figure. A case has been registered against the accused at Site Superhighway police station.
