EU expresses regret over Saeb Irkat's death

The European Union (EU) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Saeb Erekat, a prominent Palestinian leader and secretary general of the PLO's executive committee.

In a statement issued from Brussels, European Foreign Minister Giuseppe Borrell said that the death of Saeb Irkat was a great loss to the Palestinian people and to the Middle East peace process.

Recalling the services of Saeb Irkat, he said that during his lifetime, the Palestinian leader worked tirelessly to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of his people.

As a key participant in the negotiations for the Oslo Accords, he has always advocated for fair and lasting negotiations for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The EU foreign policy chief added that he had personally assisted in promoting closer ties between the EU and Palestine. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Saeb Irkat, the Palestinian Liberation Organization and the Palestinian people.
