Petition filed in court to stop 'Tik Tok' on VPN

An application was also filed in the court to block the short video sharing application 'Tik Tok' on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in Pakistan.

The government of Pakistan closed Tik Tok three days ago for not removing immoral, obscene and inappropriate content.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) shut down Tik Tok across the country on October 9, after which many people started using VPN to run the app.

VPNs not only allow ordinary users to access controversial and banned Internet content in the country, but are also used by businesses and especially banks.

Although the government of Pakistan has instructed the public to register for use of VPN software within a month, millions of people are still using VPN without registration.

After one month, VPN software will be available for use only by those who have provided the account details of any VPN software to the government through registration.

But at the moment VPNs are being used by ordinary people without registration and Tik Tok is also being run through the same software.

However, a petition was also filed in the Lahore High Court against the running of Tik Tok through VPN, which will be heard on October 13.

A Lahore resident, through lawyer Nadeem Sarwar, filed a petition in the High Court, requesting the court to issue orders to shut down Tik Tok on VPN as well.

The petition termed Tik Tok as an obscene app and said that boys and girls are making pornographic videos on Tik Tok for advertisement and sharing them on other apps.

The petition also mentioned the incident of a girl being gang-raped by a Tuck Tucker friend in Lahore and informed the court that pornographic material was being spread through the said app.

The petition told the court that after the ban on Tik Tok was imposed by the PTA, people started running it through VPN and the court should also issue orders to shut down the said app through software.

A single bench of the Lahore High Court will hear the petition on October 13.

It should be noted that many well-known tick-tackers have expressed mixed reactions to the ban on Tik Tok, saying that a temporary ban on the app could be imposed, but a complete ban on tick-tock is not the answer.

According to well-known Tik Tok-tockers, the government should issue strict orders to the app administration to remove controversial and obscene content and ensure that inappropriate content is not uploaded.
