An interesting but surprising incident has recently taken place in a town near the Egyptian city of Cairo. According to Egyptian media, a villager swallowed a mobile phone while joking with friends.
Explaining the incident, Dr Muhammad Al-Jazar of the University Hospital said that a patient named Hassan Rashad was 28 years old and a resident of the nearby rural area of Al-Qayoubia.
When the man came to the hospital with severe chest and abdominal pain, he underwent a thorough check-up and an X-ray revealed the presence of a mobile phone.
Upon discovery, the patient said that he had swallowed the mobile seven months ago at the request of friends. He thought that his mobile phone would come out again due to vomiting but it did not happen and he did not even mention it to his family due to fear and embarrassment. A team of doctors at the hospital performed a two hour long and successful operation. The mobile phone has been removed from the stomach.
The doctor said that the patient was lucky that the battery of the mobile phone did not dissolve in his stomach otherwise his life could have been endangered due to the poisoning of the carbon inside the battery. The patient is still in hospital and recovering rapidly.
