Malaysia Decides to Abolish 'Death Penalty'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has decided to abolish the death penalty for crimes such as terrorism.

According to Arab media reports, the decision comes more than three years after the Malaysian government pledged to abolish the death penalty.

The government has decided to abolish the death penalty for crimes such as drug trafficking and terrorism.

Malaysian Law Minister Van Junaidy Twanko Jaffer said the cabinet was determining alternative punishments for all crimes against which the death penalty is used.

He said that the government has also accepted the suggestions made by the special committee on alternative punishments.

The law minister said authorities were reviewing the government committee's proposals for alternative punishments before reaching a conclusion.

It should be noted that like Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia also carries the death penalty for crimes such as drug trafficking and murder.

The Malaysian government had decided to suspend the death penalty in 2018, but soon after it changed its decision to abolish the inevitable and arbitrary death penalty.

The government has announced that the sentence will be abolished next year, but the court will have the power to decide whether to sentence a convict to death.
