Elon Musk, the world's richest man, has donated $5.7 billion in Tesla shares to a charity.
The donation to the shares was revealed in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. According to the filing, the shares were gifted between November 19 and November 29 last year, without the names of the recipients or recipients of the shares.
At the time of the donation, Tesla's stock was trading above $1,000 a share.
The value of the donated shares was $5.7 billion, based on the average of the highest and lowest prices in the history of the transaction.
The charity makes Elon Musk the second-largest donor in the United States in 2021, second only to Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, the CEO of Tesla, who donated $15 billion last year.
Previous securities filings show that Musk sold more than $16 billion worth of Tesla shares in the last two months of 2021. Of that, an estimated $11 billion will be paid to the US federal tax bill.
No further details were provided about the shares donated. Musk has also set up a foundation that provides grants for research and scientific inventions about children.
