A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation, has been vandalized in the United States.
The Indian Consulate in the United States has strongly condemned the incident.
An unidentified man smashed a statue of Gandhi near Union Square in Manhattan on Saturday.
While the Indian Consulate has termed the incident as unfortunate, there has been widespread frustration in India and the US community since the incident.
The Consulate General of India in New York has said that a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged by an unknown person on Saturday. The Indian Consulate strongly condemns the incident and will take up the matter with the local authorities.
The incident has been reported to the US State Department and an appeal has been made for an immediate investigation and action against the culprits.

A bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Union Square in Manhattan was erected on October 2, 1986 by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation.
Coincidentally, the statue was removed in 2001 and re-established in 2002 while preserving the garden area.
Earlier, some unidentified persons had vandalized a statue of Gandhi in a park in California, USA.
