Sick Saudi princess released from prison after three years

A human rights group says Saudi authorities have released the princess and her daughter after nearly three years in prison without charge.

According to foreign news agency AFP, Bismillah bin Saud, 57, a member of the royal family who supports women's rights and constitutional monarchy, has been in prison since March 2019 and was rehabilitated by Shah Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman in April 2020. Requested release on grounds.

Bismillah bin Saud al-Saud and his daughter Sohud have been released, ALQST for Human Rights said on Twitter.

The tweet added that he had been denied medical treatment for the deadly disease and that he had not been charged during his imprisonment.

Saudi officials were not immediately available for comment.

According to sources close to the family, Princess Bismillah was arrested shortly before she left for Switzerland for treatment, but her condition was never revealed.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been seen as a reformist since he was appointed Crown Prince by his father King Salman in June 2017, replacing former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif.

Reforms include removing the decades-old ban on women driving and relaxing so-called guardianship laws that give men the power to impose their will on women.

However, Saudi officials have also cracked down on angry and potential opponents, ranging from preachers to women and royalty.

Princess Bismillah was held in Al-Hayir Jail, where several other political prisoners are being held.

In a statement to the UN in 2020, his family said in a statement that the main reason for his arrest was to speak out against wrongdoing.

The statement added that she was also considered a supporter of Muhammad bin Naif.

During a major anti-corruption campaign in November 2017, Riyadh's luxury hotel Ritz Carlton was used as a three-month prison term for dozens of princes and senior officials on suspicion of infidelity or treason.

According to various sources, in March 2020, the Royal Guard arrested King Salman's brother and his nephew on charges of inciting revolt against the Crown Prince.
