Washington: The British intelligence agency MI5 has issued a warning that an alleged Chinese agent has entered Parliament to interfere in British politics.
According to a BBC report, an alert from the Security Service stated that Christine Chung-koi Lee had established "contacts" with current and aspiring members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) parliament.
"Christine Chung Koi donated to politicians with funding from China and Hong Kong," MI5 said. White House sources told the BBC the case came after a "long-running" investigation into MI5.
One of the lawmakers represented by Christine Chung Koi Lee was Barry Gardner, a Labor member who received more than 20 420,000 from a woman in five years.
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Dewey also received a 5,000 donation when he was secretary of energy, but said the money was accepted by his local association.
Home Minister Priti Patel said it was "extremely worrying" that the Chinese Communist Party was deliberately involved in political interference, targeting members of parliament.
But he said Britain had measures to "identify foreign interference".
