In the Indian state of Nagaland, security forces opened fire on people in a village, killing 13 people. The villagers protested against the army's brutal action and set fire to army vehicles.
According to Al Jazeera TV, Indian security forces opened fire on civilians in Nagaland on Saturday evening. The state is located in northeastern India and near the border with Myanmar.
The incident took place in Oating village of Moon district, where Assam Rifles personnel conducted an operation on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists. According to a senior police official, the firing started when a truck carrying more than 30 coal miners passed by the army. The soldiers had intelligence information that terrorists were present in a truck, so they fired at the workers' truck, thinking it was a terrorist truck, killing six miners.
As soon as the incident came to light, locals rallied and attacked the Assam Rifles camp, setting the vehicles on fire. In response, the troops opened fire again, killing eight more people, including a security official.
According to a statement issued by the Indian Army, there were intelligence reports of the presence of terrorists in the area where the firing took place and an operation was carried out. The Army regrets this tragic incident and is conducting a high level investigation.
According to senior police officer Sandeep Tamgaj, the incident took place in Moon district. The situation in the entire district is critical after the incident.
