The federal government has increased the petroleum levy and general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products.
Private TV, citing sources, claimed that the government has increased the petroleum levy on petrol and diesel by Rs 4, after which the petroleum levy on petrol became Rs 13.62. After the recent increase, the petroleum levy on diesel has gone up to Rs 13.14.
The government has also increased GST on petrol and diesel. The government has increased the general sales tax on petrol from zero to 1.63 per cent and on diesel from 7.2 per cent to 7.37 per cent.
It may be recalled that in the context of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Finance Advisor Shaukat Tareen had announced a few days ago that the petroleum levy would be increased by Rs 4 per month and take it up to Rs 30 per liter.
It should also be noted that the increase in petroleum levy will not have a direct impact on ordinary consumers as the government has announced to maintain the prices of petroleum products.
