Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned that the United States could pay an "unbearable price" for its actions in Taiwan.
According to the foreign news agency Reuters, China has democratically declared Taiwan as its territory, while in the last two years it has stepped up military and diplomatic pressure to assert its sovereignty.
This is followed by anger in Taiwan and concern in Washington.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said that by encouraging the dynamic forces of Taiwan's independence, the United States was not only throwing Taiwan into a very dangerous situation at which Washington could pay an unbearable price.
Taiwan, on the other hand, says it is a free country and is committed to defending its independence and democracy, while China regularly identifies the island as the most sensitive issue in its relations with the United States.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said that Taiwan has no choice but to reunite with China.
