A woman who launched the 'Me Too' campaign in China has been sentenced in a sexual harassment case

A court in the Chinese capital, Beijing, has ruled in a case of sexual harassment filed by a woman who launched the 'Me Too' campaign in the country, saying there was insufficient evidence to support her claims.

A ruling by a Beijing court against the move is likely to deal a blow to China's Meteo campaign.

According to the British news agency 'Reuters', in 2018, 28-year-old Xiao Xiaxuan reported in various social media posts that in 2014, Zhou Jun, a well-known television host who works for the state-run CCTV, was sexually harassed. Was charged.

Xiao Xiaxuan had alleged that in 2014, when she was working as an intern at the company, she was sexually harassed and kissed by anchor Zhou Jun, but well-known hosts deny the allegations.

His allegations went viral, and he filed a lawsuit against Zhou Jun three years ago.

The first hearing of the case was held in December 2020 and the second hearing was held in a closed court yesterday.

The Hedian People's Court ruled that only Xiao and Xu were identified by their surnames, saying the evidence presented was "insufficient" to prove sexual harassment.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. His lawyer was not available for comment.

The woman told a small group of supporters after the court's decision that she was "disappointed" to hear the verdict after advancing her case for three years.

In his opinion, he was not given a single opportunity to narrate what happened to him.

According to Xiao Xiaxuan, "I don't know if I have the courage to stick to it for another three years."

He later said in a statement that his team would appeal the decision.

"We must appeal because it does not take into account all the fundamental rights," he said.

China's Me Too campaign began in 2018 when a college student in Beijing accused her professor of sexual harassment, which spread to NGOs, the media and other industries.

The Me Too discussion was halted at the time, but recent widespread coverage in China, without censorship, sex scandals involving tech giant Alibaba and celebrity Chris Wu have resumed discussions on the subject.
