Popularity of the marriage of the son of a Nigerian president and the daughter of a religious leader

The mass wedding of the son of the President of Nigeria and the daughter of a prominent religious leader of the country is being talked about all over the world these days.

According to a BBC report, Yousuf Bohari's marriage to Zahra Nasir Bayro is one of the biggest celebrations in Nigeria this year.

Thousands of people attended a wedding held at a palace in the Bechi Emirate, a town in Kano, Nigeria.

In Nigeria, marriage between the president's family and the royal family is unusual, a historian said.

Yusuf Bohari and Zahra Nasir met at the University of Surrey in the UK.

The wedding ceremony continued yesterday, when the bride's father, Nasir Edu Bero, was formally crowned as the emir of Bechi.

Her brother, Kano Amir, is one of Nigeria's most prominent religious leaders, but the bride and groom did not attend the ceremony.

According to tradition, the groom's family paid the bride 500,000 Nigerian naira (00 1,200, 900 euros), about 10 times the average amount in northern Nigeria.

The BBC's Ishaq Khalid in Nigeria says pictures of the bride before the wedding have sparked controversy on social media.

Some called the bride's dress "immoral" while others defended her.

According to reports, 100 private jets flew at the wedding of the Nigerian president's son, while an airport official told the BBC that the actual number of planes was less than 50.

It is believed that the coronavirus has reduced the number of festivals in Nigeria and many guests at the event were wearing masks.

Strict security was in place at the wedding, police and military officers guarding the palace, and troops were stationed at nearby strategic locations.

The wedding ceremony was performed by Nigerian Information Minister Issa Ali Pantami, an authoritative imam.

The wedding of the president's son and the religious leader's daughter was attended by top politicians and dignitaries from across the country.

Many of those attending the wedding are from the opposition, including Goodluck Jonathan, a predecessor to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who was defeated in the 2015 election.

Also among the foreign guests attending the wedding were Gambia's First Lady Fatumata Ba Baru and former Niger President Muhammadu Isufo.
