In India, the so-called claimants of democracy, the incidents of atrocities against the lower castes are constantly coming to the fore.
Nodeep Kaur, a Dalit activist fighting for workers 'rights, was arrested by Haryana police on January 12, 2021, as she was raising her voice for workers' wages at a factory near the Sanghu border. Police charged Nodip with extortion and attempted murder.
During the detention, 23-year-old Nodip was beaten by the police with shoes and sold. The policemen said that you are from Dalit caste and your job is only to clean the drains.
After being held in custody for about 45 days, Nodeep was finally granted bail. Speaking to media after his release, Nodeep said that the police was a weapon of government oppression used against civilians.
The medical report of Nodeep at the Government Medical College Hospital in Chandigarh found signs of injuries on his body. Nodeep's left foot is swollen and the nails of his left foot are broken, as well as the bones of the second and third toe are broken.
During a press conference in this regard, Nodeep Kaur said that the police beat me with their shoes and did not even take me to the hospital. I was told to be a Dalit, your job is to clean the drain.
"I wanted to graduate, but when I saw that people who have done post-graduation and PhD are also unemployed, what hope is there for someone like me who is in school?" I left.
"I have a long struggle ahead of me and I will continue to fight for workers' rights to the death," said Nodip Kaur, a 23-year-old labor rights activist.
Nodip said he was arrested by male police officers and forced into a jeep. He was beaten with sticks and shoes in a police vehicle. First he was taken to Kundli police station and then to Sonipat police station.
Nodeep said there were no female constables in either police station. They beat me so badly that I couldn't walk for days. He kept abusing me and said that if you are a Dalit, then treat me like a Dalit.
It should be noted that the issue of Nodeep's arrest was also raised at the international level. Mina Harris, the niece of US Vice President Camilla Harris, opposed Nodep's arrest and demanded his release. In addition, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee was instrumental in securing bail for Nodeep.
