US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused Iran of being a new base for al-Qaeda.
Speaking at a ceremony at the US National Press Club, Mike Pompeo said al-Qaeda's leadership, including Ayman al-Zawahiri's deputies, had gathered in Tehran. "Al Qaeda has found a new home and that is the Islamic Republic of Iran."
He called on the international community to increase pressure on Tehran, which has become a new Afghanistan. He ruled out military action against Iran, saying "even if we had this option, there would be a lot of risks in implementing this plan."
It should be noted that the United States passed a law in 2001 called the Use of Military Forces (AUMF), which gave the US military the authority to take action against al-Qaeda around the world.
Qatar's Al Jazeera TV quoted analysts as saying that Trump has only eight days left and it is quite possible that he will not open a new front against Iran before leaving office.
