An important British law enforcement record has been lost by a computer machine, and the Home Office is working to recover lost police records.
The data was deleted from the Police National Computer (PNC), which stores and shares criminal record information across the UK. The Home Office says work is underway to restore millions of fingerprints, DNA, and arrest records.
It was initially estimated that 1.5 million records had been lost, but that number could be much higher. According to The Times, the records of about four lakh people have been lost.
Home Secretary Preeti Patel said the matter was the result of human error. Engineers are working to restore data lost as a result of human error earlier this week.
