Sama Abdul Hadi: Palestinian DJ arrested for shooting music video at a religious place

Sama Abdul Hadi says she had all the necessary permits. Human rights activists and organizations have called on the Palestinian Authority to release a DJ named Sama Abdul Hadi. Sama is also known as the 'Palestinian techno queen'.

She was arrested on Sunday for holding an event in the Nabi Musa area of West Jordan. There is also an Islamic shrine, a mosque and a hostel. She says she has a permit from the Ministry of Tourism to shoot the film. The shooting also included techno party scenes.

Campaigners for the release of Sama Abdul Hadi have also launched an online petition, which has so far received thousands of signatures. But young DJ opponents worshiped near the Prophet Moses Mosque. Videos circulating on social media show people breaking hostel furniture and setting it on fire.

Ammar Dwivedi, director of the Palestinian Independent Human Rights Commission, said he had been told by Samaa Abdel Hadi that she had been advised by the tourism ministry to use the Prophet Moses for filming.

She told the BBC that Sama had told him that his "intention was not to hurt the feelings of any religious group." Ammar Dwivedi said he considered Sama Abdul Hadi's detention a "mistake" that should be rectified.

Shawan Jabarin, director general of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq, also condemned the detention in a statement posted on the organization's Facebook page.
