Earlier, on the first day of the Boxing Day Test match, the Indian bowlers stopped the hosts Australia by 195 runs. Team India started the second day with 36 runs for the loss of one wicket. Shabhman Gul and Chattiswar Pujara crossed the 50-run mark. Although the team faltered after Gul and Pujara returned to the pavilion, Ajinkya Rahane, playing the role of captain, remained on the crease and scored a century.

Ajinkya Rahane scored a century the next day. This is his 12th Test century. Rahane hit a century off 195 balls. He hit 11 fours. He has become the second Indian captain to score a century in Melbourne. He was preceded in 1999 by Sachin Tendulkar as captain. Not only that, he has become the first guest captain to score a century in Melbourne after Pakistan's Muhammad Yusuf (111). Yousef scored a century in 2004.
