India: Compounder arrested for declaring living child dead

Police in India have arrested a local hospital compounder for declaring a child alive, but the child died hours later.

According to Indian media, the incident took place in the Indian state of Assam. The child's parents were tea gardeners who came to the hospital in the afternoon with their 2-month-old baby unconscious.

No nurse or doctor was present at the hospital at the time. Gautam Mitra, a compounder present there, examined the child and pronounced him dead.

The parents brought the crying baby back home and started preparing for his last rites when suddenly the baby started moving on the mother's knee.

The parents rushed him back to the same hospital where the child was pronounced dead some time ago. The doctors admitted the child to the hospital but the child died a few hours later.

The next day, dozens of farmers gathered outside the local police station to protest, after which the police moved in and arrested the compounder. The incident is being further investigated.
