10 US military bases closed in Afghanistan

The Washington Post claims that the United States closed 10 bases across Afghanistan following an agreement reached with the Taliban in February.

The Washington Post quoted US and Afghan officials as saying that the closure of the bases as part of a full withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan as stipulated in the agreement.

The report claims that some military bases have been completely handed over to Afghan security forces while others have been evacuated but left in a state where they can be recaptured if needed in the future. Also, there was no report on how much luggage was left at each vacated base.

A US official told the Washington Post that despite the evacuation order, the United States wanted to maintain the capability of airstrikes against the Taliban in defense of Afghan forces, while US troops had the capability to conduct counter-terrorism operations against ISIS.
