In the UAE, 626 challans were issued for slow driving on highways. The Emirati Traffic Police says that driving below the prescribed speed limit on highways is also dangerous, which leads to accidents.
Last year in 2019 alone, 5625 drivers were challaned for not giving way to emergency services vehicles. According to Emirates Today, the rules are enforced by the Interior Ministry to ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules.
According to the 2017 law, the challan price for slow driving on highways was fixed at 200 dirhams, which has been increased to 400 dirhams. A fine of 400 dirhams has also been imposed on drivers who do not give way to emergency services vehicles including ambulances, fire brigades or police vehicles.
According to the newspaper, people say that it is necessary to follow the prescribed speed limit with reference to those who drive slowly on the highways. People who drive very fast or those who drive very slowly both cause accidents. Disciplinary action should be taken against such persons.
On the other hand, the Abu Dhabi Traffic Police says that it is everyone's responsibility to follow the traffic rules. Laws are made with people's safety in mind to prevent accidents. Driving slowly on highways is also against the law, which leads to traffic jams which makes it difficult for others.
