EU rejects new US sanctions on Iran

The European Union (EU) has rejected new US sanctions on Iran, saying the sanctions would continue under the JCPOA.

The announcement was made by the European Union in a statement issued today by European Foreign Minister Joseph Borrell.

He said he was noticing the US announcement of so-called sanctions on the UN's "snapback mechanism" under UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

He referred to his statements issued after the meeting of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA on August 20 and September 1, 2020, saying that the United States has unilaterally entered into its JCPOA after May 8, 2018. Participation was stopped and participation in any of its activities was stopped.

In all these circumstances, it cannot be considered a partner state of the JCPOA designed to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power. Can't impose

It should be noted that the head of European Foreign Affairs, Giuseppe Borrell, is the coordinator of the Joint Commission, which lifted economic sanctions on Iran if it suspended its nuclear program.

"As the co-ordinator of the Joint Commission, I will continue to make every effort to ensure the protection and full implementation of this agreement," he said in a statement.

He further reminded that the JCPOA is an important pillar of international nuclear non-proliferation prevention, which has comprehensively addressed regional and global security through this agreement with Iran.

He appealed to all parties to do their utmost to uphold the agreement and refrain from any action that could worsen the current situation.

It may be recalled that yesterday, the United States unilaterally imposed new sanctions on Iran and further threatened that the United States would also take action against those UN member states which would not abide by these sanctions.
