The Income Tax Department has approached the Madras High Court in a tax evasion case against Oscar Award winner and music composer AR Rahman. Rahman is alleged to have given a grant of three crore rupees to his own trust AR Rahman Trust, or the grant was given to avoid tax.
A division bench of justices PS Sivagyanam and V Bharti, hearing this petition, issued a notice to Music Composer Rehman. According to Income Tax Department lawyer DR Senthil Kumar for signing music composer AR Rahman with England-based Libra Mobile for 3.47 Crores were given in the year 2011-12. Under this contract, for 3 years, Rahman had to make a collar tune specifically for the company.
Rahman had asked the company to give money directly to his trust in return for this work. While according to the rules, this amount was to be received by Rahman himself and only after paying tax on it, he could give that amount to his trust but it was not done.
