In 2012, the James Bond film Skyfall showed that the notorious spy had a gun that worked on the print of the palm, meaning that it could only be operated by the owner.
Now this science fiction idea is about to become a reality because a company in the United States has introduced a gun that can only work on the owner's fingerprints.
Attempts were made by the companies to manufacture such guns but they were failing.
But now a 9mm smart gun has been developed that can be unlocked with a fingerprint reader and the company wants to offer it for sale in 2022.
It was developed by a company called Load StarWorks, and according to its co-founder Gareth Glasser, he did not come up with the idea for the gun after watching the James Bond movie, but after reading about parents' mistaken gunfire at the hands of children.
He says that no child will be able to use a smart gun by mistake and no one but the owner will be able to use it.
He added that the new gun would also help in preventing suicides, while such weapons would also be ineffective for criminals.
He acknowledged that there were challenges to large-scale gun production, but said that "after many years of testing, we believe that the technology and the micro-electronics in guns are so advanced that they are safe for the people."
The company has installed a fingerprint reader and a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip in the gun, which can be activated with a phone app and a pinpad.
The fingerprint reader can be used to unlock the gun in microseconds but this method will not work on wet hands or injury etc. which has been given to the pin pad for backup.
The NFC signal is also an additional backup, but the procedure is not yet known.
This smart gun is expected to be priced at $895.
