New research suggests that people who smoke before puberty may have grandchildren or great-grandchildren who become obese.
Researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK have found in previous studies that obesity in girls was caused by their father's smoking before puberty, but now new research shows that the negative effects of smoking can last up to four generations.
The researchers looked at various samples from 14,000 pregnant women and found that one of their grandparents had been a smoker since the age of 13. The grandchildren of such people were found to weigh five and a half to six kilograms more than the weight of normal children.
