A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, but no casualties or damage were reported.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the epicenter of the evening quake was on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border with a magnitude of 5.3 and a depth of 180 km.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Dir, Mardan, Nowshera, Shabqadar, Mohmand, Bajaur and other districts where residents rushed out of their homes in fear.
The PDMA said that so far the PDMA control room had not received any reports of any loss of life or property.
The statement said that the control room of PDMA is fully operational.
According to the Indian news agency ANI, tremors were also felt in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier in the day, tremors were also felt in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
It may be recalled that in February last year, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook Peshawar and other parts of Pakistan and fortunately no damage was reported.
According to the Met Department, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was at a depth of 80 km in Tajikistan.
The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 35km from the Tajik city of Margob, with a magnitude of 5.9 and a depth of 91.6km.
It may be recalled that on June 16, 2020, tremors were also felt in the upper parts of the country including the federal capital Islamabad and Peshawar but no damage was reported.
The state news agency said in its report that the quake was felt at 6.30 am with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter was reported at a depth of 112 km below the ground in Tajikistan, according to the Pima Center.
Earlier on September 24, 2019, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook Punjab and Azad Kashmir which affected Jhelum and Mirpur area of Azad Kashmir the most.
The quake killed at least 38 people and injured more than 400 when the quake continued for several days in different parts of the country.
An earthquake in September 2019 caused landslides at various places in the Jatlan area of Azad Kashmir and destroyed several buildings and disrupted the communication system.
