Former Rio de Janeiro mayor Dominic Lucano has been sentenced to 13 years and two months in prison on various charges.
Lucano, 63, a former mayor of the Italian city of Riache, has been sentenced to 13 years and two months in prison for embezzlement and abuse of power, including approving fake marriages and awarding contracts without a tender, according to the International News Agency.
Italian Mayor Dominique Lucano had set up a village for immigrants in which 450 immigrants were sheltered. The village was internationally acclaimed and is still remembered as the "Riache Model".
Dominic Lucano also gained international fame and was awarded many honors for this immigrant resettlement initiative. Later, by role modeling it, many other people also expressed their intention to establish such a village.
