The shocking story of a woman who killed six members of her family in 17 years

What is usually shown in movies does not appear in real life, but there are many incidents that are hard to believe because they feel a bit too filmy and unreal.

Such a real event whose details make it difficult to believe that anyone can do it and it is no less than a thriller movie.

Imagine for a second you were transposed into the karmic driven world of Earl.

Yes indeed a woman killed many members of her family in 14 years by poisoning them with food and drink.

All this was done by Julie Uma Joseph of Calicut district in the Indian state of Kerala and the killings came to a halt when she was planning a third marriage by killing more.

How did it all start?

It all started in August 2002 in Kozhikode, Kerala, when an elderly woman named Anama Thomas died a few minutes after drinking mutton soup, foaming at the mouth.

The family did not have any suspicions at the time as the woman had suffered from food poisoning after eating a few weeks ago.

So no one doubted the death of Anama Thomas and her people comforted the family and that's it.

Anama Thomas, her husband Tom Thomas, son Roy Thomas and his wife Julie Thomas were in the house at the time.

Seventeen years later, police suspect that the first attempt to kill Julie's mother-in-law failed, meaning the amount of poison was reduced, but the second attempt was successful.

Police believe Julie killed her mother-in-law to strengthen her grip on the family's finances.

Nothing happened for many years after that, but in 2008, six years later, Julie's father-in-law, Tom Thomas, a retired civil servant, died after eating a local dish that Julie had prepared.

Since Tom Thomas died suddenly and was very old, it was thought that the death was due to a heart attack and was not uncommon.

That is, no one demanded an autopsy on the body.

There was silence for 3 years after that and in 2011 Julie's husband Roy Thomas ate dinner one night and felt sick.

He went to the bathroom and died there. It was a death that raised some concerns.

Roe's brother Rojo returned from the United States, while Roe's uncle Matthew demanded an autopsy and his report forced Julie to change her story.

The report was handed over to Roy's widow and Julie had leaked the details to the family.

Cyanide poisoning was discovered in the report. Earlier, Julie had said that her husband had died of a heart attack, but the medical evidence had something else to say.

After the report, Julie told the family that Roy committed suicide due to financial difficulties and convinced everyone because no one took the case forward.

Police also closed the case on suspicion of suicide, but Matthew, brother of Amana Thomas, was not convinced and kept saying how Roy got access to the poison.

In 2014, Matthew himself died suddenly in a similar situation and was allegedly given cyanide mixed in water or alcohol, but this death was also called a heart attack, no one thought of the chance of all four deaths. But Julie was there.

A few months after Matthew's death, Julie attended a party at her husband's cousin, Shajo Zakaria, and food got stuck in the throat of Shajo's one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Elfini, who was taken to hospital for two days. She remained on the ventilator but died.

Shajo's wife Sally died suddenly in 2016 while she was going to the dentist with Julie and her husband.

Sally's uncle, who is now caring for her son, says he had no doubts at the time.

"Julie was close to the family a few months before Elfini's death. She used to take Sally with her to various places. A few months before her death, Sally had fallen suddenly. However, she may have been poisoned. She remained in the hospital and recovered.

In 2017, Julie married Shajo whenever no one suspected, although Sally's uncles were not happy about the marriage, but they did not mind.

Why has no one ever doubted?

In fact, Julie presented herself as an ideal woman, had good relationships with family and neighbors, had a good daughter-in-law, went to church, dropped off and brought her two sons to school, and distributed nails to neighbors at Christmas.

Julie had apparently told everyone that she was a lecturer at the National Institute of Technology, she had also made a fake ID card.

Her father-in-law was involved in education and no one ever suspected that Julie was making a fool of him.

For more than a decade, Julie would get out of the car every morning and her family would think she had gone to the institute, but where she was going was no less than a mystery.

Even the police still do not know where Julie used to go out of the house every day for so many years and what she would do if she went to the institute even though she did not work there.

Some witnesses told police that Julie was often seen in the canteen of the institute, although the institute's management said that Julie was never hired.

Then how was she caught?

After Julie's second marriage, her ex-husband's relatives became suspicious, especially after the will that Tom Thomas named his ancestral home after Joey.

Roy's brother Rojo Thomas and sister Ranji Wilson found this unusual because not only did their father not name the two children in the will, but the property was named after the daughter-in-law instead of the son.

But for many years he did not doubt it or think of challenging it.

Roe and Ranji have been in contact with one of Julie's neighbors for some time to keep up with the family.

After Roe's death, the same will was presented in a sealed form with the signatures of two witnesses and Rojo suspected that it was a forgery.

Based on this, Rojo filed a petition to investigate the suspicious death of his brother.

In fact, it is said that Julie committed 6 murders but Julie's arrest was due to Roe's death, but before that the police investigated for 2 months and recorded the statements of about 200 people, after which Julie Was taken into custody.

Rojo obtained a copy of her brother's autopsy report, which revealed that she had food in her stomach that contained cyanide when she died, while Julie said she was cooking when Roe fell ill. Went to the bathroom and died.

It was Rojo who discovered that Julie's claim to work at the institute was also false.

Police later exhumed all six bodies and examined them and found cyanide poisoning in them.

Local police acknowledged that Julie's case was no less of a challenge as six murders took place over 14 years and their investigation began in 2019, 17 years later.

Even after her arrest, Julie hid everything and the police worked hard to gather evidence and break this strong defense.

According to police, Julie also confessed to killing six members of her family, including her husband.

The confession also revealed a number of shocking revelations, including that Roe's uncle had been poisoned with alcohol.

Two days after her husband's murder, she went for a walk with her friend and tried unsuccessfully to kill Shajo Zakaria so that another man could marry Johnson for the third time.

He also revealed that he had tried unsuccessfully to kill Johnson's wife with cyanide, but fortunately the woman had not eaten the food.

After Julie's arrest, her second husband, Shajo, distanced himself from her, saying he knew nothing about his wife's past or character.

Julie's own parents and siblings refused to accept her as part of their family.

Reasons for murder

Julie committed the first three murders to get her father-in-law's property, while Matthew's murder was due to her suspicions.

Shelley and Elfini were killed because they wanted to marry Shajo.

The case is still ongoing

Julie was arrested in October 2019 along with two others, M Matthew (who provided cyanide) and Praju Kumar (a goldsmith).

In August 2020, the Kerala High Court had granted bail to Julie and said that the case against the accused was based on mere confessions.

After being granted bail, the Kerala government approached the Supreme Court, which issued a restraining order against bail and remanded Julie in custody.

Police filed a separate murder case against Julie, and in August 2021, Julie's second husband, Shajo, filed for divorce.

In his plea, Shajo said he feels intimidated as Julie's husband, I want to separate from him.
