New York: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says his country is in contact with Pakistan, China and the United States over the Taliban issue in Afghanistan.
According to a foreign news agency, during a media briefing in New York and addressing the UN General Assembly, the Russian Foreign Minister said that the United States and its allies must continue to downplay the importance of the United Nations in resolving current issues. Attempts are being made to make the United Nations a weapon to serve selfish interests.
"The interim government announced by the Taliban in Afghanistan does not reflect all groups of Afghan society, ie ethnic, religious and political forces, so we are working with China, Pakistan and the United States," he said. To ensure that the Afghan Taliban keep their promises, especially the establishment of a truly representative government and the prevention of the spread of extremism.
"At the moment, the issue of international recognition of the Taliban is not under consideration. Our first priority is for the Taliban to keep its promises," said Sergei Lavrov. Officials from Russia, China and Pakistan have visited Qatar and Kabul to hold talks with representatives of Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the Taliban.
