It may be recalled that the great Kashmiri freedom fighter Syed Ali Shah Gilani had long ago expressed his desire to be buried in the 'Martyrs' Cemetery' but it was not immediately clear whether the occupying Indian authorities would allow it or not. No? As soon as the news of Syed Ali Shah Gilani's death was received, the occupying Indian government has imposed curfew in the occupied valley while security has also been placed on high alert.

On the other hand, according to the British News Agency, Syed Ali Gilani's ancestors migrated from the Middle East and settled in Kashmir. After graduating, he went to Oriental College, Lahore for higher studies, where he was greatly impressed by the ideas of Maulana Maudoodi, the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami, and the poetry of Allama Iqbal. On his return, he joined Jamaat-e-Islami. He soon became known as an important leader of the party. He won elections on party tickets in 1972, 1977 and 1987. He advocated for a solution to the Kashmir issue in the local assembly, but the party won only a few seats in the 87-member House, so his politics remained marginalized within the assembly.
