Facebook begins blocking Taliban-linked WhatsApp accounts. According to private TV channel 24 News, the Taliban had also set up a hotline on WhatsApp after the occupation of Afghanistan, through which they were trying to run the government in Afghanistan. Facebook has shut down the hotline, along with other accounts.
A statement issued by the Facebook spokesperson said that the Taliban organization is banned under US law and the company must comply with the US sanctions policy. That is why the Taliban have had their accounts blocked due to sanctions. A Taliban spokesman said in response to Facebook's move that "freedom of expression activists around the world should respond to the closure of our WhatsApp account."
