Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has reacted to accusations that he took several million dollars with him during his escape. Earlier, Russia claimed that Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan with four vehicles full of money and a helicopter. Helicopters were also taken, but today the UAE has confirmed that Ashraf Ghani and his family are in the UAE and have been granted asylum in the country on humanitarian grounds.
Now Ashraf Ghani has addressed the nation on Facebook in which he has denied the news of carrying a bag full of money with him. Yes, I came empty handed which can be confirmed by the UAE customs. He said that I did not have enough time to change my shoes.
It should be noted that according to the BBC's Kawon Khamosh, the British broadcaster, Zahir Aghbar, the Afghan ambassador to Tajikistan, has revealed the amount in Ashraf Ghani's possession.
"The Afghan ambassador in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, said that Ashraf Ghani had packed $169 million in bags while fleeing Kabul,"
