On May 5, Halima Sisi, a woman from the African country of Mali, gave birth to nine children at the same time, including five boys and four girls.
At the time, it was thought that if all of Halima's children survived for a few months, she would be able to set a new record and become the first woman in the world to have nine healthy babies.
But it now appears that the record could go to a South African woman who, according to media reports, gave birth to 10 children at the same time.
According to the BBC, the husband of a woman named Gosyami Tamara Sthol told the South African media that he was stunned at the birth of 10 children as only eight were confirmed by the scans.
"7 sons and 3 daughters have been born, I am very happy and emotional and can't talk much,"
One South African official confirmed the births to the BBC, but another said nothing could be said for sure.
The Guinness Book of World Records says it is investigating.
Nadia Suleiman, an American woman, currently holds the record for the highest number of births in the Guinness Book of World Records. She gave birth to eight children at the same time in 2009 and all of them survived.
Births of more than 3 children are usually very rare and are often the result of fertility treatments, but the South African couple says they did not receive any treatment and the pregnancy came naturally.
Gosyami Tamara, 37, has previously given birth to twins, who are now six years old.
He said the operation gave birth to 10 babies in the 29th week of pregnancy in the South African city of Pretoria on June 7 and that they were now in good condition.
