US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet at a summit in Geneva on May 16.
According to the World News Agency, US President Joe Biden has agreed to meet with his Russian counterpart, after which US and Russian officials have confirmed that the first meeting between the new US President Joe Biden and President Vladimir Putin will take place in Geneva on June 16.
Joe Biden is embarking on his first international tour since taking office. After separate meetings with his key Western allies at the G-7 summit, NATO and the European Union, he will travel to Geneva to meet with the Russian president.
The meeting between the two leaders comes at a time when relations between the two countries are strained. The United States has repeatedly accused Russia of meddling in the election, with the new US president protesting Russia's alleged cyberattacks.
A White House official said the two countries would discuss resolving regional disputes, strengthening ties and the Corona epidemic, while a Kremlin spokesman said there had been no face-to-face meeting between US and Russian leaders for years. Tensions have risen so a meeting is now necessary.
Despite Biden's victory in the US presidential election, Russian President Vladimir Putin refrained from congratulating Biden in an interview, saying he would not congratulate the new president until all constituencies, including the opposition, acknowledge the results.
