Iranian woman journalist sentenced to 30 months in prison and 80 lashes

Leading Iranian human rights activist and journalist Nargis Mohammadi has been sentenced to 30 months in prison and 80 lashes.

According to the international news agency, a court in Iran has sentenced Nargis Mohammadi, a 49-year-old journalist and spokeswoman for the Defense Human Rights Center, to 30 months in prison and 80 lashes for the death penalty and campaigning against strict Iranian law. Two fines have also been imposed on him.

Lawyer Mahmood Behzadi Raz said that the brave journalist has decided not to file an appeal against the sentence in the current circumstances. Nargis Mohammadi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2015 but was released five years later but was barred from leaving the country.

Nargis's lawyer, Mahmoud Behzadi, added that she was living alone in Iran due to a travel ban, while her husband, Taqi Rahmani, and two children live in France.

A report published in Iran's reformist newspaper Etemad said that a female journalist had been tortured in prison during the trial. Nargis Mohammadi had also staged a sit-in in jail over the illegal move.

It should be noted that Nargis Mohammadi is the spokesperson of the Defense Human Rights Center. The group's co-founder, Dr. Shirin Ebadi, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, but the group is banned in Iran and its members are active abroad.
