A stampede broke out during the ceremony, killing 44 people and injuring more than 50, with nine of the injured in critical condition, raising fears of an increase in casualties.
Videos that have gone viral on social media show long queues to enter the tomb, with everyone trying to get in first.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called the deaths at the tomb a "catastrophe" and said an emergency had been declared at the hospital. We all pray for the recovery of the injured. האסון בהר מירון: לפחות 38 הרוגים בשל הדוחק והצפיפות | משדר מיוחדhttps://t.co/BlJdAJ5sjx pic.twitter.com/snOQ9m8WBd
It should be noted that corona vaccination has been completed in Israel after which all SOPs were abolished and that is why thousands of people participated in the event.
