Revolutionary Guards commander killed in Iraq-Syria airstrike

Iraqi security and local militia officials said that between Saturday and Sunday night in Iraq. An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander has been killed in an airstrike on the Syrian border.

Officials did not confirm the commander's identity, according to Reuters.

However, he said three other people traveling in the vehicle with the Revolutionary Guards commander were also killed in the attack.

Two other Iraqi security officials said the vehicle was carrying weapons across the Iraqi border and was targeted after entering Syrian territory.

The two officials said Iranian-backed Iraqi paramilitary forces assisted in retrieving the bodies.

However, Reuters was unable to independently confirm that an Iranian commander had been killed.

It should be noted that this incident came just days after the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizada in Tehran, which Iran has blamed on Israel.

Mohsen Fakhrizada has been described by the West, Israel and Iran's exiled enemies as a suspected mastermind of Iran's secret nuclear weapons program, although Iran has long denied developing a nuclear weapon.

Israel targeted Iranian installations in Syria last week, indicating that it is pursuing a policy of targeting Iranian targets in the region.

On the other hand, Iran's parliament has approved a bill that would not allow UN inspectors to inspect Tehran's nuclear facilities.

Under the bill, if the signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal do not ease sanctions on oil and banking, the government will spend all its energy on increasing uranium enrichment.
