Lagos: Violent protests in the African country of Nigeria have killed 51 civilians and 18 security personnel.
At least 69 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and law enforcement in Nigeria, according to the International News Agency. The dead included 51 civilians and 18 security personnel.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari confirmed in a televised address that 11 police and seven military personnel had been killed in the violence, while 51 civilians had been killed and 37 wounded, 11 of them in critical condition.
A full-day curfew is still in effect in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. Violent protests erupted after a 33-year-old man was shot dead by law enforcement on Tuesday.
Protesters are demanding the overthrow of the current government to end inflation and poverty, while President Mohammed Buhari, who has been in power since 1983, has pursued a policy of cracking down on protesters.
