According to details, a video of the girl's parents threatening to embrace death after gang-rape and violence in the Hathras area of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh went viral on social media, prompting renewed protests in the state.

According to local media, the Additional Director General of Uttar Pradesh has claimed that the girl was not gang-raped while a senior police official even claimed that the girl was not raped.
