Hundreds of years ago, what did husbands use to silence their wives?

In today's world, it is common for people to gossip and no one thinks it is bad, but in the Middle Ages, women were punished so severely that they would prostrate and give thanks so that they would not be born in this age. ۔ According to the website allthatsinteresting.com, in the Middle Ages, if a husband found out that his wife was flirting with other women, he would put an iron shell on her head.

This shell was called 'Scold's Bridle'. The shell had some iron straps on the head and a nucleus on the front which was inserted into the woman's mouth. As soon as a woman tried to speak, this pointed part would bite into her tongue. Medieval husbands would not be content with that, but would grab the shell with a rope like a horse's bridle at the back and women would be marketed like animals. I would walk around and encourage people in the bazaar to make fun of this woman and spit on her.

He also used to tie a bell with a shell placed on a woman's head to get people's attention. This type of shell has been used for centuries to control slaves. The use of this shell for wives declined after the end of the 16th century and became obsolete by the end of the next century. Shells were used until the 19th century.
