Fact: Check: Does chewing betel avoid the risk of corona?

A post has gone viral on a social networking site these days claiming that people who drink betel are protected from the novel coronavirus.

A Burmese-language post was shared on Facebook on March 30, 2020, advising people to eat betel to stay safe from krona.

The caption that accompanies this post summarizes as follows: 'The good news for betel-eating brethren is that the lime in the betel leaves the fat layer off where the coronavirus grows. '

It was claimed that "with the removal of this layer, the virus dies on its own. If the virus enters the mouth, it is eliminated by eating betel."

The post also claimed that the main reason for the low rate of cases of corona in Myanmar is that the people here consume betel. Remember that the people of Myanmar consume betel a lot.

On the other hand, medical experts have warned betel eaters that eating too much betel can lead to oral cancer.

The director of Myanmar's Center for Emergency Relief and Infectious Diseases, Khun Khun Gayi, said:

"It's completely unfounded because lime or kathona can't eradicate the virus," he said.

Myanmar's Ministry of Health and Sports, medical experts and the European Food Safety Authority denied the allegations in an interview with AFP.
