773 soldiers killed in tensions with Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia

Fighting continues in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh between Azerbaijan and Armenia, with fresh reports of clashes between the two countries, while 773 Armenian soldiers have been confirmed dead so far.

According to the report of AP news agency, Armenia and Azerbaijan have confirmed more clashes in Negro-Karabakh where fighting has been going on for three weeks while ceasefire efforts have also failed.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said that the shelling by the Armenian army did not stop and targeted different areas in Tartar and Aghdam, where two civilians were killed and one was injured.

On the other hand, Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Sashan Stepanian said that fighting has intensified in the south and that Azerbaijani forces are using artillery in the region.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said his army had taken control of several villages and towns in the Gabriel and Fuzuli region.

It should be noted that the Armenian occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh dates back to the 1990s, while it is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan.

"Our forces have pushed back and captured the Armenian army in Zengilan and several nearby villages in the southern region of Negrono-Karabakh," Ilham Aliyev said.

According to Negrono-Karabakh officials, 773 soldiers, including 30 civilians, have been killed since the fighting began on September 27.

Azerbaijani officials did not report any military casualties but confirmed that 61 civilians had been killed and 291 wounded.

Earlier last week, the two countries declared a ceasefire, but it did not last long and the decades-long conflict escalated.

A 10-hour meeting between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan was held in the Russian capital, Moscow, on October 9, and a ceasefire was declared but was violated.

The two countries accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.

The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan are scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington.

Pompeo said last week that the United States was making diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and called on both countries to abide by the ceasefire agreement.

It should be noted that with Azerbaijan and Armenia gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, the conflict with separatists in Karabakh began and 30,000 people were killed in the early years.

Negotiations between the two countries to resolve the dispute have made little progress since 1994.

Pro-Armenian separatists seized control of the Negorno-Karabakh region from Baku in the 1990s.

Later, France, Russia and the United States acted as mediators, but in 2010 the peace agreement was terminated once again.

Fresh clashes in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh erupted on September 27, killing at least 23 people on the first day, while Russia and Turkey called for an immediate end to tensions.

Clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia have so far killed more than 244 people and targeted several cities.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region covers an area of 4,400 square kilometers and is 50 kilometers from the Armenian border. Armenia, with the help of local fighters, invaded and occupied the territory of Azerbaijan from outside the region.
